Beverley
The medieval town of Beverley is famous for
its 13th century Minster, its market and its music.
Toll Gavel, Butcher Row, Ladygate, Hengate, Wednesday
Market, Saturday Market the street names alone conjure up images
of life in medieval Beverley. Today, tucked away down these narrow
streets are antique shops and craft arcades, and on every other
corner is a pub full of history and atmosphere. Every Saturday
on the cobbled surfaces, market day is as lively and colourful
as ever. With Toll Gavel, the main pedestrian street leading off
to one end with an excellent mix of shops from the well known
national chains to the more independent retailers. There is undoubtedly
something for everyone.
Located on Toll Gavel, in Anne Routh House,
one of the last remaining Georgian frontages in the area, it has
Grade II listing and retains many original features. Built in
1703, the building is of great historical interest to the town.
Anne Routh was a major benefactor to Beverley, leaving land and
funding for charitable purposes for the use of many future generations.
Kavanaghs have developed a business here with a more traditional
